dra-ma-turg
/dra-me-terg/   noun
1. A literary adviser to a theater company who researches, selects, adapts, edits, and interprets scripts, consults with authors, and contributes to the artistic development of a production.
2. One who serves as an objective eye during the creative process, helping writers see their own work more clearly.
Origin: German Dramaturg, from Greek dramatourgos "playwright," from drama + ergon "work"

Why This Exists

The economics of screenwriting feedback have always favored those who can afford it. Professional script consultants command $300 to $500 per read. Coverage services operate on timelines measured in weeks. The quality of craft guidance available to a writer correlates directly with their access to capital and industry connections.

We built Dramaturg because we have lived this reality. We work in the industry. We have submitted to the festivals, paid the entry fees, and waited months for verdicts that arrive as terse rejections offering no insight into how the work might improve.

Better scripts produce better films. Better films expand what audiences believe stories can accomplish. Dramaturg provides what the traditional system withholds: rigorous, immediate analysis of structure, character, and dialogue. Not a verdict. A conversation.

The goal is not to replace human readers. It is to ensure that when a screenplay reaches human hands, it represents the writer's genuine best work, refined through iteration rather than guesswork.

How It Works

When you upload a screenplay, our server extracts the text, runs AI-powered analysis, and returns feedback. The process is designed to minimize data retention while providing thorough craft analysis.

What You Get

Scene Breakdown

Automated detection of scenes, locations, and estimated page counts

Character Analysis

Dialogue distribution, scene presence, and relationship mapping

Structure Mapping

Alignment against Save the Cat, Hero's Journey, and related frameworks

Screenplay Writer

Full screenplay editor with WGA-standard formatting, autosave, and export

Data Handling

  • Server processing - Uploaded files are processed server-side for text extraction and AI analysis
  • In-memory only - Screenplay content is held in memory and never written to permanent storage
  • Auto-expiring sessions - Session data expires automatically after a period of inactivity
  • No accounts required - No sign-up, no passwords, no email collection
  • Encrypted transit - All communication between your browser and the server is encrypted

Transparency Note

We use GoatCounter for privacy-respecting visitor counts. GoatCounter:

  • Does NOT store IP addresses
  • Does NOT use cookies or localStorage
  • Does NOT track individual users
  • Only stores aggregate statistics (total page views, browser types)

See GoatCounter's privacy policy.

Security

Encrypted Transit

All communication between your browser and the server is encrypted

Ephemeral Sessions

Session data is held in memory only and expires automatically

No Accounts

No sign-up, no passwords, no personal information collected

Scoped AI

The AI is constrained to screenplay analysis and craft feedback

The AI

Dramaturg uses advanced AI to analyze your screenplay through the lens of professional craft knowledge. The system understands screenplay grammar: scene headings, action lines, dialogue, subtext, and structural architecture.

Dramaturg was developed by independent practitioners with backgrounds in both screenwriting and machine learning. The system combines screenplay parsing with AI models specifically prompted for craft analysis.

Structural Literacy

Recognition of story beats, act breaks, and pacing patterns

Character Psychology

Analysis of arcs, emotional wounds, wants vs. needs

Dialogue Analysis

Detection of subtext, voice differentiation, exposition

Craft Coaching

Actionable advice, not just problem identification

The objective is not to write for you. It is to make visible what you cannot yet see in your own work: the function a skilled dramaturg serves during development.

FAQ

The system accepts common screenplay and document formats:
  • .fountain - plain text screenplay markup
  • .fdx - Final Draft native format
  • .pdf - portable document format
  • .txt / .md - plain text and Markdown
  • .docx / .doc - Microsoft Word
  • .html - web documents
Is my screenplay safe? +
Your screenplay is uploaded to our server for text extraction and AI analysis. Content is held in memory only — it is not written to permanent storage or databases. Sessions expire automatically. All transmission uses HTTPS encryption.
Do you use my screenplay to train AI? +
No. User submissions are not used for AI training. The AI models were trained separately and do not learn from production usage.
What data do you collect? +
  • Page view analytics via GoatCounter (no cookies, no personal data)
  • Chat sessions are stored temporarily in server memory and expire automatically
  • Error logs for system reliability (no screenplay content logged)
We do not collect email addresses, names, or require accounts.
What if I clear my browser data? +
Local data is cleared along with other browser data. Use the export function in the chat or writer to save your work as a file that can be re-imported on any device.
What structure frameworks are analyzed? +
The system draws on established frameworks and theories:
  • Three-Act Structure - Syd Field's paradigm
  • Save the Cat - Blake Snyder's 15-beat structure

  • Story - Robert McKee's principles
  • The Anatomy of Story - John Truby's approach
  • Character arcs - want vs. need, the lie/truth arc

Dramaturg is an independent project with no affiliation to referenced authors.

Is Dramaturg free? +
Yes. No subscription fees, no usage charges, no premium tiers.
What's with the retro computer look? +
We figured if we're going to analyze your screenplay, we should at least look like we could have reviewed the first draft of WarGames.
